Operation Homefront

As we celebrate the Month of the Military Child, I want to recognize the thousands of military children you help us support each year.

Life as a military child can be challenging. Imagine moving frequently, changing schools often, and continually starting over as the “new kid”. I know. I was a military kid myself, and during 35 years in the Air Force, my own son attended five elementary schools before 6th grade.

We are not alone. These are challenges that all military children face.

That is why, thanks to your help, we are honored to offer support to military families, including:

• Stable, affordable, or no-cost housing;
• Nourishing meals and toys for the holidays;
• Backpacks and school supplies;
• Assistance with summer programming;
• Scholarships and recognition through our annual Military Child of the Year program.

I wish you could meet some of the thousands of children who are helped by events like our annual Back-to-School Brigade. One bashful little girl, only five or so, was barely taller than the pink backpack she received from our volunteer, but her smile could not have been brighter.

Turns out that pink was her favorite color, so she announced she felt confident enough now to ride her school bus all by herself. Her grateful Mom was more than a little teary as she whispered “Thank You” to our team.

For me, it always comes down to moments like these that lift the spirits of a family and restore dignity to parents facing challenging times. We thank you for encouraging and standing with our military families; you make the Month of the Military Child and all our life-changing programs possible!
